New Zealand's internet in numbers

Four questions that sound alike
The figures above answer different questions, and the numbers differ because of it. None of them proves where a particular person or device is.
- Registered in New Zealand
- The registry (APNIC) lists the holder of the block with country code NZ. It says who holds the addresses, not where they are used.
- Geolocated to New Zealand
- A geolocation database (here DB-IP Lite) estimates that the block is used in New Zealand. Foreign-registered blocks can be geolocated here, and NZ-registered blocks can be used overseas.
- Announced by a New Zealand network
- A network whose AS number is registered in New Zealand originates the route in BGP. The traffic can still be handled elsewhere, for example by a cloud or content network.
- Physically in New Zealand
- Where the equipment or the person actually is. No public dataset can establish this for an address; only the network operator knows.
New Zealand networks by announced IPv4 space
AS numbers registered to organisations in New Zealand, ranked by the IPv4 address space they originate in our copy of the BGP table.

Where New Zealand IPv4 addresses are estimated to be used
IPv4 addresses that DB-IP Lite places in New Zealand, summed per region. This is a location estimate for address blocks, usually where the provider's equipment is, not where people live.
| Region | IPv4 addresses (est.) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | 5,119,334 | 67.3% |
| Wellington | 898,655 | 11.8% |
| Canterbury | 633,807 | 8.3% |
| Waikato | 229,816 | 3% |
| Otago | 177,002 | 2.3% |
| Bay of Plenty | 159,021 | 2.1% |
| Manawatū-Whanganui | 137,583 | 1.8% |
| Northland | 56,769 | 0.7% |
| Hawke's Bay | 47,244 | 0.6% |
| Taranaki | 37,989 | 0.5% |
| Gisborne | 22,310 | 0.3% |
| Southland | 21,777 | 0.3% |
| Tasman | 20,314 | 0.3% |
| Nelson | 16,512 | 0.2% |
| Marlborough | 14,833 | 0.2% |
| West Coast | 9,930 | 0.1% |
DB-IP labels regions inconsistently (“Wellington Region” next to “Wellington”, “Manawatu-Wanganui”); we fold the labels into the sixteen official regions without moving any range. Auckland's share reflects where large providers' central equipment is.
How these numbers are made
Registered space is the sum of IPv4 and IPv6 blocks that APNIC's delegation file lists as allocated or assigned to holders in New Zealand (country code NZ). AS numbers are counted the same way. Announced routes come from APNIC's view of the global BGP table: one collector's view, so a route filtered before it reaches that collector is missing. RPKI status is route origin validation (RFC 6811) of each announced prefix and its origin AS against the validated ROAs published by the five RIRs. Geolocated addresses are the IPv4 ranges DB-IP Lite places in New Zealand, whoever holds them. The Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau have their own country codes and are not counted.
